The world worst nuclear disaster happened in Chernobyl NPP when the 4th reactor exploded and released huge amount of radiation into the environment. That happened 26 April 25 years ago. The final number of victims are still not set after so many years and I assume it will never be. Many had to leave their home in the so called "zone" a 50 km radios area what been sealed of permanently, and that not the only one there are some more sealed off territories around the neighbor countries to.
I personally have a huge respect for those who worked there to prevent further escape of radioactive elements. Even if they know or didn't know what they were battling with, they managed to build the shelter and so contain the fallout inside the reactor. I do hope that in the upcoming project to clear the site this landmark will be gone from Ukraine for ever.
